Award Winning Project

The Bronze Award-winning Project

Project Name: Eco-brick
Institution: City University of Hong Kong

Project Overview:
Eco-brick is a low-carbon building material produced using used engine oil. It transforms wastes into a valuable resource and promotes localised recycling of engine oil. The Eco-brick has low production costs and offers high sound insulation and thermal insulation performance. It fits for applications such as assembling synthetic partition walls as well as noise barriers near highways and railway facilities.

Challenges Faced by the Team:
The team is focused on finding innovative and sustainable solutions to manufacture environmentally friendly and durable green building materials derived from recycled resources. These challenges involve various aspects such as technical application, material selection, and sustainability. Despite encountering unexpected test results and facing limitations in technical application and resources, team members remain resilient and committed. Through mutual support and collaborative efforts, they persistently seek ways to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.

Achievements during the Team’s Participation
This experience was a breakthrough for the team. It is a great opportunity for team members to understand the significant of sustainable construction and environmental conservation. Through the competition, the team recognised the vital role for engineers play in driving sustainable development in construction industry. The team aims to utilise the technical skill in real-life construction projects, making a significant contribution to environment and sustainable development in Hong Kong as well as worldwide.

Vision for the Team:
The team plans to collaborate with environmental organisations and construction companies in Hong Kong, and apply its engineering solutions into real-life construction projects. They believe that it can revolutionise the construction industry and drive sustainable development in Hong Kong. Additionally, they aim to expand into other waste reduction and recycling areas, making a greater impact on environmental conservation. Through partnerships with construction companies, the team will integrate Eco-brick at different stages of projects, from material selection to construction, to achieve sustainable building objectives. They will also focus on optimising the product and exploring further opportunities to apply the product in different scenarios.
